No. 208

Just a day or 2 before the end of the half there were discovered in College 3 or more cases of Scarlet Fever. Those who had got it were immediately isolated in the Sanatorium in College – It was resolved, however by Scott, that the school should be disunified on the Thursday night & that all the fellows should be off by Friday morning. Most of the fellows who were up for Election went home till the Monday morning, (when there is vivâ voce); a few, however, stayed on till the Tuesday. It is needless to say that all of the annual forms of the Major Candidates going to Abbey twice on Sunday in dress was remitted for this year.

The Examinations were pushed forward by Wednesday being made a whole school day; & the Friday epigrams as well as the reading out of marks were omitted.

It seemed to be thought that other boys as well as those in whom the fever had shown itself might have got infected from the same source, -tho’ not themselves yet taken ill, & might give it to others; hence all this hurry to get the school dispersed, for after all, little more than 1 day was gained,
